The integumentary system is composed of our skin, nails, and hair. It's main purpose is to form a protective covering over the internal organs that we have. It contains living and non-living cells, but the living cells are mainly epithelial tissue (skin). There are also some nervous tissues that allow us to have a sense of touch.
The skin's function is to keep water in, and other pathogens out, regulate our body temperature, and to get rid of wastes. The hair's function is to protect us from UV rays, to regulate our body temperature, and to keep foreign particles out. The nails simply protect the tips of our fingers and toes.
The skin has multiple layers on it. There is the dermis, which is the layer under the epidermis, or our surface skin. The hair are made up of hair folliciles and melanin. They regulate body temperature by contracting a muscle and making the hair stand on end. Nails grow from nail roots. As new cells are created, nails get longer.
The integumentary system interacts with every body system that exists. It protects all of them! Everything that is vital to our body is contained inside our skin. Our hair protects certain parts of our body, and our nails protects our fingers and toes.
